Lectures

Week 1 (27/8/2021)

We started the class by having a warm welcome and self introduction by both lectures which is Miss Noranis and Miss Jeniffer. The class is all about what is the module is about and what are we going to do for this module. I found out that this class will interest me a lot as the module is about creating animation characters, play cards and animated novels. I am pretty sure that I will fall in love in this module as it is a very interesting topics.

Week 2 (3/9/2021)

The class started with Miss Jeniffer tutorial class by showing us the guidance and basics on how to create Vormator characters in Adobe Illustrator. She started by introducing the tools, control panels, some tools that we needed for this work in Adobe Illustrator such as strokes, opacity, layer tabs, pen  tool etc. Next, She continue the class by showing the way and step she usually did to create a character. She then show us her human- like cartoon character design of an cute and adorable chameleon that she made prior to class, with referencing images taken from Pinterest/ Google. After that,  she used the bezier tool, which was quite familiar as we had used in the other module (Digital Photography and Imaging), to create the vormator shapes. The following procedures were putting the shapes together based on the vormator chameleon and filled the color.

After the tutorial class, Ms. Noranis explained the principles of character design which includes their shapes, colour, emphasis & contrast, harmony, expression and poses which played a huge role in how a character is viewed.

Shapes- define a character's silhouette, to identify a character from one another, this is what sets the iconic look.

Color- plays an important role in determining who are the heroes/ protagonists or villains/ antagonists, different choices of colors give an impression on a character

Emphasis & Contrast- a good character design is when you pick one visual element in a character and exaggerate it, making the character outstanding and memorable, sometimes picking a cultural element and adding it to a design makes it uniquely authentic, like Disney's Hercules for example.

Harmony- all shapes, lines, color, motifs, patterns must be put together in a tasteful manner, every element used in your design must work together like they compliment each other- a balance of visual elements that has a visual hierarchy.

Expressions/ Poses- what makes your characters win the heart of an audience is their behavior/ quirks/ personalities that are visually shown.

Figure 4: Color Study (3/9/2021)

She explained how characters follow these sets of colour rules which makes it appealing to viewers eyes, thus why we are so captivated them as it reflects the personality of the character itself. For example, dark colour which are associated to evil and bright, vibrant colours used to express carefreeness and positivity.

Week 3 (10/9/2021)

The class began with the lecture by asking us 'Why and how the Instagram photos look so good?' There were few answers which were emphasis, lighting, angle, contrast etc. Most of the pictures below followed the principle of 'composition'. Ms. Anis then introduced to us about different types of shots. An industry technique was shared which is to find a balance positive & negative spaces in composition and apply visual hierarchy. We can train our eyes to look for the positive and negative value tones. If your picture looks good in black and white version, then it will be good in colored version too.

For the tutorial class, Ms. Jennifer showed and demonstrated us how to play around with the gradient tool and applying swashes in Adobe Illustrator. She explained the appropriate dimensions needed for the layout of the game card in Adobe Illustrator which is 897 X 1497 pix. She went through how to adjust the transparency and opacity and how to use the layers.. Then, she showed us how to create the card design after we have done our vormator character design.

Week 4 (17/9/2021)

Perspective
- important to visual design especially environment
- creates diversions

Practical

Exercise 1 - Vormator Challenge

Figure 1

Based on the different shapes given in figure 1, we were told to create and design a animated character. We cannot changed the designs of the shape but we can rotate the angle and change the size of the shape. Miss suggested us to draw our sketches on paper before using Adobe illustrator to draw and design the final outcome. We were suggested to draw a few different designs so that we can choose the best and our most favorite one as the final designs. This is very interesting as we can brainstorm some weird or funny character based on what we like.

Ideas of what I want my vormator character to be:
-fox
-octopus

I found myself struggling on coming out a character hence I waste a lot of time creating the vormator character design. I also struggle on using the tools and the gradient so i watched back the recorded live videos that are posted by Miss Ainis.
