Lectures

Week 1 (27/8/2021)

Ms Noranis started the class by recap on what was touched on in previous classes which is Lecture slides from week 3-5.

Then she continue on with the topic for this week which is Visual Techniques: Chiaroscuro.

What is Chiaroscuro?

- refers to the use of light and dark to create the illusion of three- dimensional column on a flat surface
- "Chiaro"- Bright, "Scuro"- Dark

Why Chiaroscuro is used?

- to increase dramatic tension
- create sensational effect
- pull your attention to a subject in an intense way
- create a tasteful composition of negative vs positive spaces

For the tutorial class, Ms Jennifer then started off her demonstration on "Decisive Moment" poster with a few quotes relating to simplicity of the design using Adobe Illustrator. For example "Often Less is More", and "Simplicity is the Ultimate Sophistication". She gave examples of creative compositions which are designed to be straightforward and does not require much detail.  After done illustrating in Adobe Illustrator, she demonstrated on how to animate the gif in Adobe Photoshop.

Practical

Exercise 2 - Decisive Movement

In this task, we are required to create one minimalist poster. We need to think of a moment/ scene in either a movie or story that turned the tide of the story. These are decisive moments that impacted a story and you as an audience. Whether the moments are based on real life events or fictional narratives, human psychology is easily affected by moments like these. We need to create a minimalist poster that reveal one decisive moment in an existing fictional narrative make it as minimalist as we can to give another perspective towards the design.

Visual Research

When I first started doing on this assignment, I have the interested to explore more on the movie "Mulan". However, I feel that the decisive movement of the poster I designed does not really reveal on thee decisive movement. Hence, I decided to change a new movie which is “Stand by Me 2”.
