Lectures
Week 1 (3/1/2022)
We started the class by having a warm welcome and self introduction by all our lectures which is Mr Asrizal, Miss Anis, Dr Jinchi and Dr Vinod. In the class, Mr Asrizal explains about what is this intercultural design module is about and he brief us about the content outline of this module which is about what the assignment we going to have and dateline of those assignments. The lectures also explained about what is culture and he gave us some example. They explained that cultures is not only cultures of a race or religion but it can be more than that. At the end of the class, sir asked us to starts to do the grouping as we are going to start group discussion on what cultures our group wants to do on Wednesday with our groupmates.
Week 2 (10/1/2022)
Sir started the class by showing us example of past year students work so that we can have an idea of how the proposal should be. He also explained on the past year students work to make us more understand and clear so that we know what to do for our proposal. He show every step and all the element that should be included in our proposal slides. After showing us on the past year students work, he asked us to watch a video titled Culture and Us recorded by Dr Jinchi. In this video recorded, Dr Jinchi explained more deeply about what is the meaning of culture and different layers of culture.
For this week, we do not have lecture but we have Question and Answer. During the time, students asked the lecturers questions that they are curious of and the lectures answered them.
Practical
Week 1 (5/1/2022)
Before our group discussion starts, our group leader, Ken had asked us on our Whatsapps group to think of some culture that we are interested to do for this module and we could bring up our ideas during the meeting. During our discussion, our groupmates brought up ideas about fashion culture, wine culture, food culture, video game culture and also culture on twelve zodiac. During the meeting, we think that there are groups that are doing video game culture and hence we didn't chose this culture. In the remaining culture, we all agreed and voted to have fashion culture as our main topic.
Week 2 (13/1/2022)
We meet up on zoom to discuss on our topic and we think that African fashion is too difficult for us as there is only one out of seven of us that knows about this culture. It will be too hard for others for us. Hence, we look back on the topics we had brought up before that but we think that those topics is also too broad. Then we think of a new topic and we finally finalized our topics which are tattoo and piercing. We were not sure whether is this topic good and hence we do find a bit research about this topic and we plan to ask sir during the tutorial. We also start to do a bit of our slides so that we will not be too slow on our progression and we could let sir check and look at our progression.
Week 3 (20/1/2022)
After sir agreed our group to change our topic to tattoo and piercing, we start to research on different ancient tattoo culture and their meaning behind the culture. Then we include all the research we found into our slides. We also spend time thinking on the research objectives and questions where what we objective and purpose we want to have for our culture and the questions we would like to question on about this culture. We also came out with 5 rationale ideas for our final projects. After finish the slides, we all meet in zoom and recorded our presentation.
Week 3 (22/1/2022)
On this day, Mr Asrizal organized a trip to Mah Meri Culture Village which is an orang Asli village on Carey Island.
In this village, we learn of their culture where they will craft statues that are made from wood, which are made of nyireh batu tree(darker wood) or nyireh bunga tree(lighter wood). The reason of them crafting the statues id that they believe that everything in the earth have spirit, in example whenever they cut a tree, they will have to plant one more tree. There were tsunami happened there before we went to the trip, so they craft Moyang Puting Beliung as they believe that the statue can stop the tsunami happening on their island.
Besides that, we also learn on making origami. We also tried out the traditional wedding clothes which is made of nipah leaves. They also show us their wedding ceremony not only by explaining but also letting us to experience the wedding ceremony step by step.
Feedback
Week 1 (7/1/2022)We have our first meet with our group supervisor which is Mr Asrizal. He asked every group to tell him about our group topics. When he heard that our group topics is about fashion culture, he gave us comment where the topics is too broad as fashion have many kinds of category and we have to narrow down our topic on what specific kind of fashion our group would like to focus on. When we heard about we discuss in our Whatsapp groupchat where one of our groupmate say they we can do on african culture and we all agreed with that where we thought it is something very interesting where some of us never had learn anything about that before. Then, our team leader, Ken ask sir whether is African culture ok to be our main topic and sir replied yes and he asked us to go for it and start to do research on the topic.
Week 2 (14/1/2022)
We asked sir whether can we change our topic and sir agreed on our decision and he gave us idea that we can include different ancient tattoo cultures of different countries in our slides. He then asked us to go start our slides.
Week 3 (21/1/2022)
Sir asked us to show him our slides progression and he comment that our research objective and research questions is inaccurate and he asked us to work on more on our research objectives and questions. He also comment that our theme is just nice.
Reflections
Experience
I had a good experience in Mah Meri Culture village where is experience new things about orang asli culture as i had never been to orang asli village before. It is nice to not only looking at photos of the wedding ceremony but we can have the opportunity to dressed up and experience it personally. For the proposal, our group have good time communicating and everyone involve in doing the task given.
Observations
I could observed that how Mah Meri culture village is preserving their culture. They not only preserve but they also teach their posterity about their culture and they are desperate to spread of their unique culture. Through this research on tattooing, it helps me to know and learn about the history and the meaning behind tattoo of different culture in ancient times such as Africa, India, China and Japan.
Findings
Throughout the process of doing the proposal, I found out that it is important for us to inherit our culture and is also important for us to learn about others culture to prevent misunderstanding. I think that our group didn't really did well as we are quite slow and procrastinate in our progression and we should speed up our progression.
